The first meeting of the new year for the DeSoto County supervisors dealt a lot with annexation. The city of Olive Branch is attempting to annex  land in the Center Hill, Pleasant Hill, Cedar View, and Lewisburg areas, but a number of residents have been very vocal about their opposition. If all 50 square miles of land were annexed into the city, Olive Branch’s population would grow by more than 14,000. The city claims it has spent millions of dollars adding utilities in those areas over the past 20 years, so the residents there should be brought onto the tax rolls. Sheriff Bill Rasco also voiced concerns that if Olive Branch adds that much area, it would need to hire an additional 35 police officers to cover the added responsibility, which could take up to two years to do.  In the end, the board passed a non-binding resolution objecting to the proposed annexation.
