Senior level members of the Memphis police and fire departments are underpaid. A new city compensation study finds they’re underpaid compared to their peers across the region and the nation. The study shows a senior officer with more than 15 years on the job is making eight-percent below the competitive market rate, and lieutenants and detectives are paid 16-to-17-percent below market rate. The police and fire department unions have been negotiating with the city for pay increases for weeks.
